Architecture (Latin „architectura“, from the Greek „arkitekton“, ὰρχιτεκτονική – arkhitektonike, from ὰρχι chief or leader and Τεκτονική builder or carpenter) is the art and science of designing buildings and other physical structures.

Architecture is both the process and product of planning, designing and constructing space that reflects functional, social, and aesthetic considerations. It requires the manipulation and coordination of material, technology, light, and shadow. Architecture also encompasses the pragmatic aspects of realizing designed spaces, such as project planning, cost estimating and construction administration. A wider definition may comprise all design activity from the macro-level (urban design, landscape architecture) to the micro-level (construction details and furniture). In fact, architecture today may refer to the activity of designing any kind of system and is often used in the IT world.

Architectural works are often perceived as cultural and political symbols and as works of art. Historical civilizations are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements.

A. No, it doesn't take 8-1/2 years to graduate with a master's in architecture. The standard NCARB curriculum is 6 years for a master's. There are many fine architecture schools in your area.

Symbolically, what is the significance of the architecture of the Salisbury Cathedral?
Q. I'm writing an essay on the religious importance of architecture and am on the Salisbury Cathedral. Aside from the stained glass, what can the monuments and buildings of the cathedral represent? The spire? Thanks.

A. Salisbury Cathedral is built in the English English style, and is unusually harmonious in its composition (unlike most English cathedrals) because it was completed in a relatively short period of time in the early 13th century. The Early English style made extensive use of pointed arches, which are not only structurally more secure than round arches, but they also serve the purpose of emphasising the vertical axis, and pointing the eye upwards. This was the dominant trend in English Gothic: the architecture tells the viewer to look up, both physically and metaphorically, towards Heaven. The extravagant spire of Salisbury - the tallest of any English cathedral - emphasises this message.

  • The art of dancing stands at the source of all the arts that express themselves first in the human person. The art of building, or architecture, is the beginning of all the arts that lie outside the person; and in the end they unite.
  • Architects know that some kinds of design problems are more personal than others. One of the cleanest, most abstract design problems is designing bridges. There your job is largely a matter of spanning a given distance with the least material. The other end of the spectrum is designing chairs. Chair designers have to spend their time thinking about human butts.
