Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

George Santayana Historia (Allegory of History) By Nikolaos Gysis (1892)

History (from Greek ἱστορία - historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation") is the study of the human past. Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it sometimes attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians debate the nature of history and its usefulness. This includes discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing "perspective" on the problems of the present. The stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the legends surrounding King Arthur) are usually classified as cultural heritage rather than the "disinterested investigation" needed by the discipline of history. Events of the past prior to written record are considered prehistory.

I want to delete my history and cookies from Firefox to make my past viewing history disappear. How?
Q. I know that for Internet Explorer, one can right click on the icon, and click 'properties' and delete saved passwords, saved viewing history, and cookies. How do I do this if I've been using Firefox lately. I am going to sell my computer and I do not want the buyer knowing my viewing history. Please help!

A. pretty sure all you do is just click on the tools tab and the hit internet options and it should be right there "delete history" and "delete cookies" if your selling your computer i would look into doing a whole system repair though that gets rid of everything!!

How is history relevant and important to the study of political science?
Q. I know that political science is the study of the processes, principles, and structure of government and of political institutions; politics and history is whole new other topic. How can the two be related? And it what way? What are the benefits it can take from each other? If you could help me out with the basics, it would be greatly appreciated. If you could tell me more about it, then I would try my best to comprehend.

A. I think that they are not really separate. Political science and political history are intertwined. To understand any theme or topic in politics you need to understand the history behind it and any principles associated with it are inferred from historical evidence. To learn about elections you will study past elections , to learn about prime ministers you will learn about what prime ministers have done, etc. There is no other way.

How would history of the United States be different if the Louisiana Purchase had not happened?
Q. I can't find an answer to this on the internet. I'm doing a project on 10 events in history from 1789-1820. I Reallly need this answer. Please help!

A. A whole new history would have to be written. Most everything we have today would have been delayed from 50 to 100 years and some would not have occurred at all. We may even need passports to go to get gumbo and Cajun foods...or to see Disney World. The industrial revolution in the U.S. would not have occurred or might be happening at this time rather than when it did. There would be no trans continental railroad or the steel and rail tycoons. We'd still have slavery since there would be a lack of industrialization in the North to replace the physical labor with. Automobiles would not be any more than a novelty, like 4-wheelers are today, as we'd be riding in horse drawn buggies. OGRE

History is the study of human behavior through time. When used as the name of a field of study, history refers to the study and interpretation of past humans, families and societies as preserved primarily through written sources.

  • The end of history is, alas, also the end of the dustbins of history. There are no longer any dustbins for disposing of old ideologies, old regimes, old values. Where are we going to throw Marxism, which actually invented the dustbins of history? (Yet there is some justice here since the very people who invented them have fallen in.) Conclusion: if there are no more dustbins of history, this is because History itself has become a dustbin. It has become its own dustbin, just as the planet itself is becoming its own dustbin.

  • I don’t know much about history, and I wouldn’t give a nickel for all the history in the world. It means nothing to me. History is more or less bunk. It's tradition. We don't want tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinker's damn is the history we make today.
