In woodworking and decorative arts, refinishing refers to the act of repairing or reapplying the wood finishing on an object. In practice, this may be apply to the paint or wood finish top coat, lacquer or varnish. The artisan or restorer is traditionally aiming for an improved or restored and renewed finish. Refinishing can apply to a variety of surfaces and materials such as wood, glass, metal, plastic and paint, although in Britain, when referring to wood or wooden furniture it is commonly known as repolishing. There are a great variety of both traditional and modern finishes, including the use of faux finishes. One interesting modern development in refinishing is the art of distressing or antiquing, making the finishes of pieces look older. While refinishing is often undertaken to salvage an old piece of furniture, in the case of antique furniture refinishing has been known to significantly reduce the overall value of the piece. More specifically, do I need to actually clean the floor before starting any kind of refinishing/resurfacing? Asked by Crystal M - Sun Jul 13 08:47:49 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. You want to do this right the first time. It's a big job! First you will need to remove all foot boards and heating grates and reset any nails that have raised over the years. Next, sand the floors to give it some tooth. If you are going to re stain you need to go all the way to the bare wood. (rent a floor sander it will save you time and be a lot easier on your back.) The most important part is to get all the dust up after sanding. I suggest, first vacuum with an upright then go back in with an attachment with a brush and scrub the brush into the grooves between all the boards where an accumulation of dust will hide. Leave the room for 30 minutes to let all the dust that's been stirred up from the vacuum, settle. Then go over the… [cont.] Answered by Lindy Lou - Wed Jul 16 12:39:45 2008 Wood floor refinishing qstn relatd to the one posted earlier How do I find out what the original finishing was Q. I think it was paste wax. I want to convert to polyurethane and also make the floor darker. The floors have been sanded, can I apply stain and poly-urethane now? They are light colored oak (parquet). Thanks. Asked by betta - Tue Jul 24 20:48:12 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you don't know stick with oil based minwax products. Don't use a combo poly u' and stain product. If you sanded smooth you are off to a good start... stain- wait a day or two for the stain to set. Then apply the poly- I suggest 4 coats with lambswool --- it dries quick, in fact it will look wet- but actually be very dry in just a few hours. You can walk on it in 24 hours - but don't put any furniture for a few days to a week if you can wait that long. The stain smells worse than the poly- but it's not that bad.
