Is Balsa wood suitable for wood carving and sculpting?
Q. I'm totally new to wood carving and sculpting. Bought a block of balsa wood. My rough model looks so ugly. I can see all the holes of the balsa wood. Those tiny tiny holes which the water and nutrients seep through from the roots. How about basswood?

A. You've already answered your question about balsa. It's porosity would also tend to make it splinter under stress, so, delicate carving is, clearly, out. Just remember, the finer the grain, the denser the wood. The denser the wood, the harder and stronger it is. Go to a lumber store and pick out a handfull of small pieces to practice on. The store may let you have a few scrap pieced for free, or, some end pieces that are very inexpensive. find one that, not only, feels good to cut, but has an appearance the looks good. Keep in mind the differences in the surface of cuts that go with the grain, and those that cut across the grain. These differences should help you determine how you approach the actual orientation of your design in… [cont.]
