What do you do with old comforters and quilts?
Q. Do you just throw them out?
Asked by Robert C - Sun Mar 18 13:44:56 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I donate all my old blankets, quilts, etc. to the local homeless shelter. I look for organizations in my community that will accept the household items my family has outgrown or gently used. I only discard what is not acceptable to donate.

poll: do you use sheets and blankets, or comforters and quilts?
Q. You can add your family's ethnicity if you want - I am curious as to which cultures prefer which bed-making method. I grew up in a sheet and blanket household, but I suspect nobody makes the bed that way anymore. sounds like everybody uses a bit of both...

A. I prefer in the summer months especially, sheets, and a coverlet! It is so comfortable, and when it needs washed, it is easy to care for because it doesn't take up the whole washer and dryer! In the cooler months, I just add a blanket under the coverlet, and I'm warm and cozy! Another tip, if you have a pet that insists on sleeping in your bed, you don't mind washing the coverlets all the time like the big bulky covers, and they dry faster!

Where can I find cute green & blue or green & purple comforters?
Q. I already looked in pbteen, jc penney, macys and target. I really want a new comforter, but I can't find any that I like or that are cheap enough. Are there any websites that aren't as well known that sell comforters or quilts? My room is green, so I would prefer a link to something that matches that.

A. Here you go :) A duvet (pronounced /du ve /, from the French duvet /dyv / "down") is a type of bedding a soft flat bag traditionally filled with down or feathers, or a combination of both and used on a bed as a blanket. Duvets originally came out of rural Europe and were made of Eider, a type of duck's down, which is well known for its usefulness as an insulator. A comforter is a type of bedding a soft flat bag used on a bed as a type of bed cover. It is filled with either an artificial material (such as polyester batting) or a natural material. A comforter usually doesn't cover the pillows or box spring of the bed. It is basically a luxurious thick, fluffy blanket that people put on their bed to achieve a much higher level of comfort… [cont.]

Quilts vs. Comforters!?
Q. Hi! My father has a blanket that he loves and has had it for over 20 years and it's time to retire it. The current blanket is as thin as a quilt with the batting. I was curious to see if you guys think quilts are warm or a regular comforter. Where can I buy a quilt as well? Thanks!!!
Asked by lil_luv_baby - Sat Feb 21 14:16:38 2009 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I think they are about the same. Quilts are more densely sewn throughout than comforters. For me one quilt equals one comforter with regards to warmth. Quilts can be bought in most large department stores but they are not hand-made as they claim. The actual quilting is loose and, to me, looks like it will break after a few washings. If you want a real hand-made quilt, try googling 'amish quilts.' They'll be more expensive, but the quality and design is superb. Since they are much better made, they will last forever with proper care. Buying one good quilt would pay for itself over time. You'd need to replace a store bought one many times over.

A. I measured the one that's in my grandbaby's crib... it's thirty inches wide by thirty-eight inches long... thought I'd better check what others have... this one is 36 X 40... another site of hand made blankets said she made them 3x5 ft... to fit the whole top of the crib... so this is no help, huh?... LOL!!>.. oh, here's the Amish quilts... all different!... looks like you get to choose!... congrats on the newie!!...

What type of bedding should I use with a platform bed?
Q. I have just purchased platform beds for all the bedrooms in my home and I'm not sure what type of bedding to buy. I don't want the comforter, quilt, whatever to hang over the platform of the bed as the platform extends past the mattress and is really what I love most about the new beds. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

A. Just tuck the spread under all the way around. To do that and have it look nice buy a thinner spread like a matelasse. A comforter or some quilts would be a little too bulky.

A. They're all used for warmth. A duvet is a large "pillow" stuffed with fiber or feathers, usually white, and covered with a duvet cover. A comforter is basically the same thing, only with a decorative pattern and some king of "tufting" to hold the stuffing between the back and the front. A quilt is a 3 layered cover with a front, a back, and a thick blanket-like insides

Where is the best place to shop for king-sized bedding?
Q. Okay, I am looking for a comforter quilt or a duvet cover that has an Indian/bohemian/old world look to it. I do most of my shopping online only because I live in a very rural area. I like very bold colors, old world colors that create a very bright and happy atmosphere, but also have a mysterious and far away look. Any suggestions as to where is a good place to shop? I am also on a serious budget, just fyi.

A. I love to sew and wish I could show you but you can probably find someone, as other person answered, in a fabric store or craft shop. They sometimes give short classes too, because they want to sell fabric, so it's helpful to everyone. Starting with something square and simple is certainly the best, such as a table cloth, then move to pillow case, then quilts would be a great plan. There are many ways to go about making quilts, and this would give you practice with the seams and the sewing machine, too. With the sewing machine, there are some simple steps that can make a lot of difference, and you will hopefully have the instruction book that came with the machine. That would be a life-saver! Some of these things are: filling the… [cont.]

A. I bought a brother 3000i and in less than a year, have outgrown what it can do. Save your money and get one with as much as you can afford. I lucked out and got an older model babylock elure for 500. It is used, but a work horse of a machine. Find a reputable machine dealer who takes trade ins and look for a deal. The brother is a good starter machine. I just needed more out of a machine than it could give. I paper piece and the thread cutter is a big plus and saves on thread. I sew more than 20 hours a week. The rest of the time I spend cutting and then dreaming about the next quilt. I am trying to start a small business and just needed more horse power so to speak. I don't know if Walmart still carries the machine I mentioned. [cont.]

Which is thicker, a quilt or comforter?
Q. I am in the process of purchasing a comforter or quilt. Not sure which is thicker. Im usually always cold (year round) and looking for something thick for my bed. Can you explain in detail what a coverlet and a duvet is? Would I benefit by buying on?
Asked by Blue L - Tue Oct 13 10:09:07 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Comforters are thicker than quilts. They are made with a variety of fill weights, the higher the fill weight the warmer. The fills can be goose down/feathers or a synthetic. Synthetic can be better for people with allergies. Make sure you check washing instructions before you buy. Many are not machine washable. A duvet is a cover for a comforter that you can remove to wash and/or to update the look of your room. A coverlet is a thinner version of a comforter. Perhaps layering would be the best idea for your bed. Pick a nice quilt or comforter you like and have another blanket in a coordinating shade (a solid if you are putting a pattern on as the main cover) and fold it on the end of the bed.
