A patchwork quilt is a quilt in which the top layer consists of pieces of fabric sewn together to form a design. The quilting design does not necessarily follow the patchwork design.

Originally, this was to make full use of left-over scraps of fabric, but now fabric is often bought specially for a specific design. Fabrics are now often sold in quarter meters. (A "fat quarter" is one square meter folded into four and cut along the folds, thus giving a square piece of fabric 50 cm on a side, as opposed to buying a quarter of a meter off the roll, resulting in a long thin piece that is only 25cm wide).

Designs can be geometric and formal or imaginative.

The quilt is formed of three layers: the patchwork, a layer of insulation wadding (batting) and a layer of backing material. These three layers are stitched together ("quilted"), either by hand or machine. The quilting can either outline the patchwork motifs, or be a completely independent design.

Old book called the patchwork quilt?
Q. My mom read a book she thinks was called the patchwork quilt. She said it was about this girl who's grandmother was making a quilt and each square of the quilt had a different story to it. She read it when she was a little girl. Does anyone know where I can find a copy of it. Please

A. Was it the The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flournoy and Jerry Pinkney? Tanya's grandmother had begun to make a patchwork quilt using scraps from old shirts, Halloween costumes, and any other materials that had meaning to them. Tanya was so interested in how her grandmother so carefully cut pieces of material and sewed them together so she spent much of her time watching and helping her grandmother produce this "masterpiece." On Christmas morning, Grandma becomes sick and is no longer able to work on finishing the quilt. With the help of her mother, Tanya takes it upon herself to help finish the quilt for her grandmother. Finally, when Grandma is able to begin working on the quilt again, she finishes it by stitching on the last square,… [cont.]

A. I suppose it depends on the context the phrase came in. I thought it might at first be a reference to some vermin getting into a trapper's cabin and ruining things, but a quick glance on the search engine revealed this site: which seemed to be a tour site, and said this: Touring the Delta by car reveals this patchwork quilt of islands, rivers, channels and sloughs, offering a window look upon villages shaded by eucalyptus and palms, and crops laden with summer's bounty. If you're early, you might catch sight of river otters, muskrats or blue herons.

A. Your best bet is to go to a local quilt shop and ask if they know anyone who would do this. They may even let you put up a sign. There's a shop in Slinger called Common Threads and another in West Bend called Gingerbread Junction (links below). You could also contact the quilt guild in your area - they could probably put you in touch with someone. Check the third link for a list of guilds in Wisconsin.
