Number theory is the branch of pure mathematics concerned with the properties of numbers in general, and integers in particular, as well as the wider classes of problems that arise from their study. Number theory may be subdivided into several fields, according to the methods used and the type of questions investigated. (See the list of number theory topics.) The terms "arithmetic" or "the higher arithmetic" as nouns are also used to refer to elementary number theory. These are somewhat older terms, which are no longer as popular as they once were. However the word "arithmetic" is popularly used as an adjective rather than the more cumbersome phrase "number-theoretic", and also "arithmetic of" rather than "number theory of", e.g. arithmetic geometry, arithmetic functions, arithmetic of elliptic curves. When arranging the natural numbers in a spiral and emphasizing the prime numbers, an intriguing and not fully explained pattern is observed, called the Ulam spiral.FieldsFrom Wikipedia under the

Asked by Jane - Sun Dec 28 01:35:19 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you don't want to be the one who is told to move one step at the time, all of those math knowledge will help you on thinking path. In many case, the program/software is only the reflection of your answer after analysis is done. Basically, you will need to know how to solve the problem before you know how to write the program to resolve the problem. Answered by Scott P - Sun Dec 28 01:47:54 2008 Why don't they offer number theory in high school? Q. we only get 1 unit devoted to number theory in precalculus and that's it. the same is true for complex numbers. we only learn about for 2 weeks and then it no longer matters Asked by what is math??????? - Thu Feb 18 13:16:09 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The math that they teach in high school is rudimentary, and fundamental. You learn how to construct proofs---applicable to every branch of mathematics. You learn basic concepts of algebra---applicable to every branch of mathematics. You might also learn the basics of calculus, statistics, and/or linear algebra---techniques that are applicable to pretty much every branch of science and engineering. Number theory is way more specialized than any of the above. Learning number theory doesn't necessarily help you to understand any other branch of mathematics, and its applications are few. Answered by pzifisssh - Thu Feb 18 13:28:08 2010 What is the FLY Theorem in Number Theory?
Q. I believe it is presented as a puzzle in the math puzzle sub-sub-forum of the mersenneforum.org Lounge or Fun sub-forum. I'm referring to the FLY (Fermat-Lucas-Yablon) Theorem in Number Theory that has to do with the Lucas generalization of the Fibonacci sequence. It is only related to Fermat through the Mersennes. Asked by David Y - Sat Jun 17 09:26:29 2006 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments A. It's probably a mistyping of FLT which is shorthand for Fermat's Last Theorem. FLT states that threre are no integer values a, b, c that are solutions to the equation a^n + b^n = c^n when n > 2.
