From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A metal is a chemical element that is a good conductor of both electricity and heat and forms cations and ionic bonds with non-metals. In chemistry, a metal (Ancient Greek métallon, μέταλλον) is an element, compound, or alloy characterized by high electrical conductivity. In a metal, atoms readily lose electrons to form positive ions (cations). Those ions are surrounded by delocalized electrons, which are responsible for the conductivity. The solid thus produced is held by electrostatic interactions between the ions and the electron cloud, which are called metallic bonds. Usage in astronomy is quite different, see below. GNU Free Documentation License How much metal can go undetected through an airport metal detector? Q. People can get through those things with small amounts of metal like the buttons on their jeans. So how big does the metal object have to be for it to set the beeping thing off? The one you walk through. Could it detect a safety pin or those clips from a tensor bandage thing? @Kurt because I'm going on a plane tomorrow and those things are part of my normal attire. I would like to avoid any potentially awkward situations that may arise with airport security, if you must know. Asked by Bryan - Tue Feb 2 02:20:46 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. It depends entirely on how sensitive the detector is, or what level they have set it to if it is adjustable. All airports will not be exactly the same. In the past, I have seen them detect the foil wrappings around the gum in a package (when they used to do that with gum). But it does not go off for eyeglasses (metal frames), wedding rings and so on. I would not worry about buttons - like the metal clasps on suit pants, or the metal button on a pair of jeans. The clips on ace bandages (same as tensor bandage??) are probably aluminum, so they would not likely be detected anyway. In any case - if it goes off, and your pockets are empty already, then they will go over you with the hand held wand to find the specific place that causes the… [cont.] Answered by Roger K - Tue Feb 2 08:07:40 2010 What is a good metal or element that would have made a good medieval weapon? Q. We know stone, bronze, iron and a steel alloy were all, at one point in history, used to make weapons such as swords and spears. However, we know now of many more metals and elements that we did not know of 2000 years ago. With that said, other then bronze iron or steel, what metal or element would make a good, sturdy sword or shield? Asked by Temporary Existance - Mon Jul 14 11:22:36 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. We have also learned that it isn't just WHAT something is made of but HOW it is made. You can take the exact same steel and make a katana in the traditional way vs. in a factory setting but you will most certainly get two very different blades. What is the application of the blade or shield? Some shields deflect blows while some stop arrows. Some blades are used for cooking while others are used for combat. A titanium shield might be a good choice. Light and resists impacts and cutting well. It gives enough to not be destroyed by other cutting impliments. A diamond sword would shatter and be quite useless as would emerald or jade for the same purpose. Gold would be hacked apart and bend in either application as it is a soft metal.… [cont.] Answered by brick2skull - Mon Jul 14 11:31:13 2008 How do I keep my metal necklace from rusting?
