From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A cathedral (French cathédrale from Lat. cathedra, "seat" from the Greek kathedra (καθέδρα), seat, bench, from kata "down" + hedra seat, base, chair) is a Christian church that contains the seat of a bishop. It is a religious building for worship, specifically of a denomination with an episcopal hierarchy, such as the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, and some Lutheran and Methodist churches, which serves as a bishop's seat, and thus as the central church of a diocese, conference, or episcopate. In the Greek Orthodox Church, the terms "kathedrikos naos" (literally: "cathedral shrine") is sometimes used for the church at which an archbishop or "metropolitan" presides. The term "metropolis" (literally "mother city") is used more commonly than "diocese" to signify an area of governance within the church. There are certain variations on the use of the term "cathedral"; for example, some pre-Reformation cathedrals in Scotland now within the Church of Scotland still retain the term cathedral, despite the Church's Presbyterian polity that does not have bishops. The same occurs in Germany, where Protestant churches (mostly non-episocopal) co-operate under an umbrella organisation, the Evangelical Church in Germany, with some retaining cathedrals or using the term as a merely honorary title and function, void of any hierarchical supremacy. As cathedrals are often particularly impressive edifices, the term is often used incorrectly as a designation for any large, important church. Several cathedrals in Europe, such as that of Strasbourg, Essen, Freiburg i.B., and in England at York, Lincoln and Southwell, are referred to as Minster (German: Münster) churches, from Latin monasterium, because the establishments were served by canons living in community or may have been an abbey, prior to the Reformation. The other kind of great church in Western Europe is the abbey. From Wikipedia under the

Im doing a medieval newspaper and im in charge of the editorials..im thinking about doing one of them for building a cathedral. If you have any other ideas please tell me, oh and the time period is 1066 a.d. Asked by varu-chan - Sun Dec 14 21:27:06 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. A cathedral could certainly be of benefit to a town. The most obvious benefit is that it provided a great deal of employment for a long period of time. While most people lived in the countryside, by the 11st century, populations were on the rise and increasing numbers were moving to the growing towns. A cathedral would provide employment for such young men (far better than the alternatives like begging or thieving!). Thus it could lower crime and raise prosperity in the unskilled urban poor. In addition, many jobs would be available for skilled craftsmen (masons, carpenters, glassmakers, goldsmiths, etc), drawing the skilled middle classes to the town. This would in turn increase middle-class prosperity. With more craftsmen, would come… [cont.] Answered by Gerald - Tue Dec 16 21:27:20 2008 What is the link between King charles II and Westminster Cathedral? Q. We had a history lesson where I had to make notes from a video adn I put Westminster Cathedral down in the "when and how did he become king" What is the link between the two? Was his corination there? Asked by Sarah - Sun May 3 12:59:31 2009 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. Charles II was crowned King of England and Ireland in Westminster Abbey, not Westminster Cathedral, in 1661. As said, the Cathedral is Catholic; Westminster Abbey is where most of our monarchs have been crowned over the centuries. It's much older than the Cathedral. However, Charles was first crowned King of Scots in 1651 in Scone, Scotland. He then went into exile abroad until his restoration. He was King of England, Scotland and Ireland.
