A city is a relatively large and permanent urban settlement. Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town within general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law.

For example, an article of incorporation approved by the local state legislature distinguishes a city government from a town in Massachusetts. In the United Kingdom and parts of the Commonwealth of Nations, a city is traditionally a settlement with a royal charter. Historically, in Europe, a city was understood to be an urban settlement with a cathedral, hence the official status of St David's as a city in the United Kingdom despite its population of 1,797 in 2001.

Cities generally have advanced systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation. The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process. A big city or metropolis usually has associated suburbs and exurbs. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban sprawl, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centers of employment. Once a city sprawls far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis.

What city in the United States would you recommend friends to visit and?
Q. What city in the United States would you recommend friends to visit and what is one city in the United States you would not recommend friends to visit? The City I recommend is Chicago and the City I least recommend is Detroit.

A. Chicago, hands down. It might be because I've been born and raised in the burbs of Chicago, but it has everything: music, food, museums, a great nightlife, businesses, great colleges, festivals!!, and everything else you will ever need. My second place would be Washington DC, because it is amazing. A great nightlife, politicians around every corner, more happy hours than you can count, museums that are free, great public transportation, good food, etc. Again, I might be biased because I lived there for awhile. Yeah Detroit is not the best place ever, but a lot of the town outside of there are great. If you want a good Michigan city, try Grand Rapids, it's now the largest city in MI and it is pretty rockin for a small city.

How can a city keep recent college graduates from leaving after graduation?
Q. The city of Pittsburgh has a problem with retaining its college graduates. There are nearly 70,000 college students within the city limits of Pittsburgh and a majority leave after they graduate. Pittsburgh lacks a young professional and immigrant population. Do you have any ideas on how to retain these important groups of people? Does your city have specific programs for this reason? I shouldn't say Pittsburgh 'lacks' young professionals and immigrants but has trouble attracting 'new' young professionals and immigrants.

A. You need incentives to make them stay. Offer property tax cuts/freezes for 1st time buyers. Revitalize downtown. Hot, new neighborhoods with lofts, cafes, boutiques, restaurants are always going to attract young urban proffessionals. And if it takes tax breaks for small businesses to come back to Pittsburgh, then try that. It seems like you have a PR problem. Offer student loan forgiveness for city jobs.
