Crazy Quilt or Traditional Block Quilt?
Q. I'm 20 and I'm going to make my very first quilt. I have dreamt about doing one for years now. I cannot decide which type of quilt to make. Which do you think will be easier for a beginner? The type of block quilt I want to make is without a pattern and with unique materials, not one block the same. Is quilting easier than it looks too?

A. Crazy quilts were immensely popular in the late 1800's as a way of showing off women's needlework skills. They are heavily embellished with embroidery, lace, buttons, etc. Crazy quilts are not as easy as they may appear. It requires real planning to assemble crazy quilt blocks. Instead, I'd recommend starting with something a little easier. It doesn't have to be a traditional block, but you could incorporate the freeform appearance of crazy quilts with the modern fabrics and styles of today's quilts. Check out the following Flickr groups for photos of quilts that might appeal to you:

simple quilt ideas?
Q. I'm trying to think of ideas for my next quilt...I'm a beginner and have only made a crazy quilt before...I would like to do something a little more challenging then a crazy quilt, but haven't found anything...does anyone have any ideas? thanks

A. If you're not quite ready for pieced blocks yet, you might want to try something like a Trip Around the World quilt... that's just a bunch of squares all the same size, which are sewed together in a pattern that's concentric --it ends up being a sort-of diamond shape (actually a square "on point"). In other words, a row of yellow squares, then a row of blue squares, then a row of purple squares (or any color combination you want). To make that pattern even more interesting, you can also use *various shades and tints of each color* for the squares, rather than just the same fabric and color for them all... in other words, for blue squares, you could use a number of *different* fabrics --each of which "reads" mainly blue but may have… [cont.]
