You can play with those layer blending options. Also, double-click the layer or right-click --> Blending Options and play around in there. There are many ways to do things in Photoshop but since I don't know exactly what you want I can't be specific. Pressing F1 or going to help will bring up Photoshop help. From there you can look up everything about Photoshop. Layers of rock in the Earth's crust have been known since pre-history. That discovery was probably made by prehistoric peoples 10-20,000 years ago, or more. All they would have needed was to see a rock cliff, a mountainside, a portion of earthquake faultline that pushed some rock layers upward. Eventually, people began to associate certain rock layers with metal ores and minerals, knowing that certain types of rocks would be found in those layers. It wasn't until around the 1600's though that the idea of layers of the whole Earth began to form.
