From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A quilt is a type of bedding composed several layers generally combined using the technique of quilting. Many are made with decorative designs, and some of these are not used as bed covering at all, but are rather made to be hung on a wall or otherwise displayed. In addition to quilting the quilt layers can be combined by tying. Tying refers to the technique of using thread, yarn or ribbon to pass through all three layers of the quilt at regular intervals. These "ties" hold the layers together during use and especially when the quilt is washed. This method is easier and more forgiving if the quilt is made by hand. Tied quilts are called, depending on the regional area, "lap", "comfort" or "comforter", among other names. In British English, duvet may be used instead of quilt, wadding is another way of saying batting, and calico refers to muslin, rather than to a fabric with a printed pattern on it. I have never done this before, but want to personalize each block. This will be an Xmas gift and I don't have a lot of spare time so I am not looking for time consuming ideas. Ideas? I know I can search the net, but what have some of you done to personalize and make special quilts? Will be for a five year old niece. Give her a pack or two of Crayola fabric crayons ( available at Office Depot or craft stores ) and as many sheets of plain white paper as quilt blocks you want to make and have her draw pictures about her favorite things, people, activities etc. Use these drawings to make the quilt blocks by turning them face down on a piece of fabric ( a blend makes a more brilliant transfer than 100% cotton) and ironing the back of the paper at the temperature recommended on the crayon box. Maybe you can make one corner block with info like her age at the time of the drawings and who made it and gave the quilt to her. Answered by jidwg - Sat Oct 7 15:18:49 2006 Does anyone know of a good place to get quilt designs? Q. I am looking for a design for my next quilt, preferably with either cranes or pandas. I want it to have an oriental look to it. Does anyone know of a good place to get the design or even just some cool oriental pictures that i can get ideas from? Asked by froggz - Sun Feb 25 12:07:22 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Ok, this may just be a really stupid idea, but have you thought of looking at origami books? If you did them as line drawings, then they are really basic shapes and I really think for instance some of the butterflies would look good as quilt pieces that way. Maybe also look up kanji or chinese characters and see if some of them would work well incorporated into a design. Peonies, some woodcuts, chrysanthemums... Otherwise, this person did a bunch of "oriental style" quilts you could look at to get ideas. There are some commercial patterns out there too, I like Helene Knotts, you could search for those. Q. I want to make a quilt out of some of my son's old onesies, but I wasn't sure if I needed to use a stabilizer material. Any other tips would be appreciated too. So you may want to use a woven cotton backing on each square of the quilt. especially if you are going to use a woven cotton for the back of the quilt. I think it will make it easy for you to sew too,. Answered by drip - Tue Oct 6 11:07:20 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "quilt" From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
