Quilting is a sewing method done either by hand, by sewing machine, or by a longarm quilting system. The process uses a needle and thread to join two or more layers of material together to make a quilt. Typical quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. The quilter's hand or sewing machine passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire piece where quilting is wanted. A straight or running stitch is commonly used and these stitches can be purely functional or decorative and elaborate. Quilting is done on bed spreads, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Quilting can make a project thick, or with dense quilting, can raise one area so that another stands out.

What area of the quilt do I start sewing to begin the quilting process?
Q. I have everything ready to start quilting, but I am unsure if it matters where I start. Should I start in the middle and work my way out, or start with the straight lines across or up and down? Should I start from the same side every time or alternate sides? I made sure it is pinned tightly and I have a walking foot. Is there anything else I should be doing? This is a lap quilt so it isn't that big. Any help would be wonderful!! Thanks

A. Start in the center and work out to one edge, then break off and go back to the center again, to work out to another edge. You can go back with a hand needle and tie off all the thread ends and bury them in the quilt. You'll notice that even with a walking foot, the top will travel a little bit, so you want it to travel evenly on all sides. That's why the batting and backing should be cut bigger than the top, and you don't bind the edges til the quilting is done. . .

Does anyone know of any flower quilting books?
Q. I am looking for a quilting book for that has applique flowers of the month. I have looked everywhere.

A. Eleanor Burns just came out with a new book called "The Magic Vine Quilt." It's a series of applique flowers that were originally published in a newspaper in the 30's. The Quilt in a Day books have fantastic instructions and I recommend them to anyone interested in quilting. Here's a link to the Quilt in a Day shop, but you can get the book at many quilt shops or through Amazon. I also like Piece O'Cake Designs for their applique patterns. They have a bright, whimsical style that appeals to me. I've included a link to the books and DVDs at their site, but again, you can find these in quilt stores and at Amazon.

What is the definition of cotton quilting fabric?
Q. I know what cotton jersey, cotton poplin and cotton flannel is but what is cotton quilting fabric?

A. The best way to experience the difference in the cotton choices you named would be if you could see and feel the difference. Cotton jersey, as you know is stretchy, mainly used in T-shirts, sometimes in stretchy bedding. Cotton poplin is normally of medium to heavy weight, a durable fabric, mainly used in clothing manufacturing. It is stiffer than quilting cotton. Flannel is a very soft, woven fabric that is napped on one side. Quilters tend to shy away from flannel, because most flannels seem to be a bit stretchier than cotton quilting fabrics, due to the differences in the weave of the warp and weft threads (warp threads are the lengthwise yarns through which the weft is woven) and the fabric can shrink differently in the length and… [cont.]
