San Francisco, officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the fourth most populous city in California and the 12th most populous city in the United States, with a 2008 estimated population of 808,977. The only consolidated city-county in California, it encompasses a land area of 46.7 square miles (121 km) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, giving it a density of 17,323 people/mi² (6,688.4 people/km²). It is the most densely-settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated large city in the United States. San Francisco is the financial, cultural, and transportation center of the San Francisco Bay Area.

In 1776, the Spanish established a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for Francis of Assisi on the site. The California Gold Rush in 1848 propelled the city into a period of rapid growth, increasing the population in one year from 1,000 to 25,000, and thus transforming it into the largest city on the West Coast at the time. After three-quarters of the city was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, hosting the Panama-Pacific International Exposition nine years later. During World War II, San Francisco was the port of embarkation for service members shipping out to the Pacific Theater. After the war, the confluence of returning servicemen, massive immigration, liberalizing attitudes, and other factors led to the Summer of Love and the gay rights movement, cementing San Francisco as a center of liberal activism in the United States.

Today, San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination, renowned for its chilly summer fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of Victorian and modern architecture and its famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, and Chinatown. The city is also a principal banking and finance center, and the home to more than 30 international financial institutions, helping to make San Francisco eighteenth place in the world's top producing cities, ninth in the United States, and fifteenth place in the top twenty Global Financial Centers.

What are the best agencies in san francisco?
Q. I've been looking for talent agencies in san francisco. My favorites so far are: Marla Dell San Francisco Top Talent Look Are there any better ones in san francisco? If not, which of those three are the best? I'm looking for an acting agency, not modeling, although modeling is okay with me.

A. hi! It's a lot of work and time to find an agency, be sure to study their sites about their submission requirements. Do not feel bad if you get a "rejection" letter. Read them carefully, as it will tell you when you can resubmit, usually every 6 months. I advise taking note of your submissions in a notebook along with the date, response and when to send a new submission. Good luck in finding an agency!

What is the best location to stay san francisco?
Q. Hi, I'm staying in San Francisco the last weekend of September and I was wondering what is the best location to get an hostel/hotel. I'm looking for something cheap, but also from where it's easy to go around and get to all the touristic spots and sights. We're a group of young people (average 22 years old) so we'd also like to do something at night. Is there something that meets all this features?

A. Union Square is probably the best place to stay. There are lots of good restaurants, shops, theaters and clubs in the Union Square area. It is centrally located easy to walk to many places, easier to get cabs, with lots of public transportation options. Driving in the city can be confusing for visitors and parking is difficult and expensive. Muni offers multi day passes that are good for buses, trolley, light rail and the cable cars [unique experience but $5 per ride]. There is a hostel on Mason near Geary that you could check out they have both dorm and semi private rooms so depending on the size of your group you could be able to all share one or two rooms. And for some great ideas of things to do check out these websites:

Any good breakfast or lunch spots in San Francisco during the week for a birthday?
Q. Hello, I live in San Francisco. I am taking the day off for my husband's birthday, it's on a Wednesday. We are having a party for him that night, but I want to take him somewhere really fancy for breakfast or lunch that day, to kick off the birthday celebration. Any nice places you could recommend during the work week for breakfast or lunch, where the food is good and he will be impressed?

A. A really sweet breakfast/brunch type place is at Stacks in Burlingame. Since you'd be going on a Wednesday, I don't think you'd have to wait long for a table. It is popular so if you are going for lunch, you will probably have a bit of a wait. Crustacean's is a really nice place to go. They have the best garlic noodles there. (not sure about lunch...they used to be open for lunch but I'm not sure now) at The Omni Hotel North Beach Embarcadero The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus (sorry couldn't get the link to work) Hope this helps. I know more places but they are only open for dinner. The ones I gave you links for are all open for lunch. All have good food too. If you don't like these or they're not your hubby's taste, the best… [cont.]
