San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California and the 12th most populous city in the United States, with a 2008 estimated population of 808,976. The only consolidated city-county in California, it encompasses a land area of 46.7 square miles (121 km) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, making it the second-most densely populated large city (greater than 200,000 population) in the United States. San Francisco is also the financial, cultural, and transportation center of the larger San Francisco Bay Area, a region of 7.4 million people. In 1776, the Spanish established a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for Francis of Assisi on the site. The California Gold Rush in 1848 propelled the city into a period of rapid growth, increasing the population in one year from 1,000 to 25,000, and thus transforming it into the largest city on the West Coast at the time. After three-quarters of the city was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, hosting the Panama-Pacific International Exposition nine years later. During World War II, San Francisco was the port of embarkation for service members shipping out to the Pacific Theater. After the war, the confluence of returning servicemen, massive immigration, liberalizing attitudes, and other factors led to the Summer of Love and the gay rights movement, cementing San Francisco as a center of liberal activism in the United States. Today, San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination, renowned for its chilly summer fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of Victorian and modern architecture and its famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, the cable cars, and Chinatown. The city is also a principal banking and finance center, and the home of over 30 international financial institutions, helping to make San Francisco fifteenth in the world's list of cities by GDP and eighth in the United States. GNU Free Documentation License san francisco? Q. we will be going to san francisco and will drive. I know that parking is very expensive. If we stay in like motel 6 or best western isnt parking free? We will stay for 2 nights. Any hotel ssuggestions, etc? Asked by armenharoutunian - Fri Aug 3 03:10:16 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well, I would recommend Squaw Valley over SF. Driving and parking in SF is a waste of money. They have free public trolleys that are convenient and on time. There really is no need for a car in SF unless you see Napa Valley. it is a must see, for any wine connoisseur! Anyway, make up your mind, Manzanillo, Squaw Valley, SF, or maybe even nowhere! Just Kidding. All hotel parking is expensive. we paid over 30 dollars a night and during the day at the parking meters you pay 25 cents for 30 minutes, and you can not exceed 30 minutes so you have to constantly turn back and add more money. I am wanting to go to San Francisco State University, and know nothing about the area or the neighborhoods of San Francisco. What are the best and worse areas I.E. what areas should be avoided. I want to live some place that doesn't have a high crime rate where I feel safe and there's not much crime all over the place and where I can take public transit to the university. Please help! Asked by walking through life - Tue May 26 20:06:06 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Good Areas: Marina, Pacific Hights, Sea Cliff ---but its VERY $$ to live there and i doubt an SFSU student is a multimillionaire. bad areas: stay away from hunters point...very crime infested...also the Haight is kinda bad...lots of homeless. and the Tenderloin good residential areas: sunset and richmond. but if ur going to SFSU, id suggest you either live in a dorm or in a place called parkmerced. its full of college students and within walking distance of campus (5-10 min walk). also, you could rent a 2 bedroom and stuff like 10 people in and split the rent. parkmerced.com Answered by babalu - Tue May 26 23:07:23 2009 What time do the cable cars in San Francisco start runing?
Q. We're planing to go to San Francisco and want to avoid all the traffic and confusion of one-way streets, so we're going on foot and by trolley car. What time do the first cars start running (in hopes of avoiding a line)? What time do they stop? Asked by Pianist d'Aurellius - Wed Jun 20 00:05:56 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. The Cable Cars start running at 6am. The very first car leaves the barn at 5:45 am. The cars stop running at about 12am. If you want to avoid lining up at the turn table at Powell and Market, Bay and Taylor and Bay and Hyde, go one block from the turn table and wait at the station there. (only do that when the line is longer than 45 minutes wait. The cars each depart from the stations about every 10-15 minutes. The price is $5 one way, and $11 all day. Be sure to have a great stay in San Francisco. Answered by Cycling Magician - Thu Jun 21 04:24:57 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "san francisco" San Diego explores possible role in America's Cup
